EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT: This office functions under the direction of the County Administrator, with policy guidance of the Jefferson County Board's Law Enforcement/Emergency Management Committee. The Emergency Management Office prepares and maintains County emergency operations plans; coordinates and assists in developing town and municipal emergency management plans within the County; coordinates and participates in local emergency management training programs and exercises; and provides emergency information and public education to prepare the County and its municipalities to cope with natural or man-made disasters.

EPCRA:  The Emergency Management Office assists the Jefferson County Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) with its obligations under the Emergency Planning and Community Right to Know Act (EPCRA) and Wisconsin State Statute 166.20. The combination of these two laws makes Jefferson County responsible for hazardous materials planning and serving as the hazardous materials information receptacle for the public. The Jefferson County Hazardous Materials Plan has been updated and approved. Work continues on the development of Off-Site Hazardous Materials Plans. 

FLOOD MITIGATION: Jefferson County Emergency Management has received funding from the Flood Mitigation Assistance Program so that cost-effective measures are taken to reduce or eliminate the safety and health risks to residents and their property and to reduce or eliminate the cost involved in rescue efforts for first responders through mitigation activities. The current program is an acquisition program where the Emergency Management Office has purchased, acquired, and razed approximately 30 properties located within the floodplain. This program saves approximately $4 in emergency response and environmental mitigation costs for every $1 expended on this program. 

INTEROPERABLE COMMUNICATIONS: The Jefferson County Office of Emergency Management is working with all municipalities and first responders to encourage them to include all mutual aid radio channels into their radios. This is offered through grant funding to either replace old radios that do not have the capacity with new radios, or to have their existing radios reprogrammed to include the mutual aid channels.

Emergency Management protects communities by coordinating and integrating all activities necessary to build, sustain and improve the capability to mitigate against, prevent, prepare for, respond to and recover from threatened or actual natural disasters, acts of terrorism or other man-made disasters.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

  • Develops and promulgates plans consistent with state plans, directs the emergency management program and performs such other duties related to emergency management as required

  • Coordinates the Flood Mitigation Acquisition and Demolition Project
